The house is located on the banks of the river Sevre Niortaise, in the heart of the village of Coulon.
It is located in an historical house : the house of the Coutume. The Coutume (a local tax) was paid by boatmen working on the Sevre Niortaise.
From April to November, the museum is open and explains the creation by men of this very particular territory: the life traditions, the local animals, the nowadays challenges to preserve the environment…
All year long we offer, to tourist and educational groups, activities to discover the Marais Poitevin by foot, cycling, in site, in class and in the museum.
Different exhibition rooms to visit:

The Maraiscope : A big screen movie with lights and sounds effects. In 15 min the main stages of the construction of the Marais Poitevin are recreated.

The boat exhibition room : it reproduces the atmosphere of a boat carpenter’s shed and the construction of flat bottom boats, an indispensable tool in the Marais Poitevin.

The inside of a Marshland House of the end of the XIX th century shows the day to day life of the Marais Poitevin inhabitants.
